The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has decided to make martial arts such as kendo compulsory for both boys and girls in health and physical education classes at junior high schools in its curriculum guidelines.
The decision was made to make martial arts compulsory at the first and second grade levels on the grounds that "martial arts are useful for learning about Japanese traditions and culture, as well as for developing a sense of consideration for others and a sense of normality." We are very pleased with this announcement.
We hope that more and more children will become interested in kendo and, hopefully, will knock on the door of the Tono Kyukai.
The basis of kendo is correct "Men-uchi" (striking with the face). In my dojo, I teach my children to be courageous and dive into the opponent's face, not to use a risky kote (small hand) when striking.
The method is repetition of the basics with a focus on kirikiri. By repeating this seemingly monotonous practice day after day, children will surely grow step by step. If your child is a beginner, you will see a change in his or her face within a month.
However, the "mind, technique, and body" training that the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) also aims for cannot be completed overnight, so both children and instructors must persevere and practice.
Of course, parents' patience is also necessary. Kendo is a strict and noble martial art that is distinct from other sports.
Through such rigorous training, children who have mastered the correct fundamentals will eventually graduate from this dojo.
Whenever we encounter difficulties in the future, we will be able to take the "right side" without fear of taking risks.
In this age when everything is available, what is gained through sweat and sweat through kendo will never fade away, and that is why we have children who have graduated from our dojo once and come back to knock on our door as adults.
It is truly a blissful pleasure for me.
Leaders
Instructors actively participate in the Central Transmission Seminar, etc., in which the All Japan Kendo Federation (ZENKENREN) transfers its instruction to each region, and strive to teach in accordance with the ZENKENREN's instructional methods. We also encourage our instructors to obtain Social Sports Instructor certificates to improve their skills so that they can demonstrate their abilities without becoming critics.
