I have been practicing kendo at the Shin Sou Fu Kan for a little over two years by the time I had the opportunity to visit Shiku Kai. Lindsay-sensei has been under the direct instruction of Abe-sensei since he first started practicing, and by default, I\u2019ve had the wonderful experience of learning from Abe-sensei through Zoom, Line, Telephone, and on his visits to the United States.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
More recently, I finally got to meet and practice with Iwanami-sensei, who has been a notorious name spoken amongst the dojo, as well as Okamoto-sensei, whom many of us have never met before. They all came to visit and share their teachings in early November of 2023. It was a really unique experience to have Japanese senseis travel to meet us in Oklahoma. So many people came from all over the country and absorbed everything they could from them. I\u2019ve never seen so many people so engaged and entranced by the particular mindset that could be easily seen and felt by Abe-sensei, Iwanami-sensei, and Okamoto-sensei through their kendo.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Their visit made me really excited for the near future as we were going to follow them back to Japan in a couple weeks\u2014and my excitement was fruitful and accurate.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
During the first practice at Shiku Kai, I noticed immediately how welcoming and passionate every member was. They did their very best to help me. Although my Japanese was minimal, the language barrier wasn’t debilitating as everyone gave me a helping hand. Everyone was so hospitable and considerate. Alongside my own passion for kendo, it encouraged me to give my best every chance I got.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Something that still sticks with me after the time that has passed is how detail-oriented practice was. Iwanami-sensei pointed out the little flaws in balance and even pinpointed what muscles I should\u2019ve been using when I raise my shinai. With Abe-sensei, he was able to break down how to use my wrists properly and how to fix my footwork. In my head, being at Shiku Kai helped me understand the mechanics of it all. There were many lightbulb moments that I\u2019ll never forget. Although, just because I understood the mechanics, it did not mean I knew how to consistently execute them. But I think that made me enjoy every practice even more. I remember telling Abe-sensei that I think I knew what I was doing wrong, but I was having trouble fixing it; in response, he laughed and told me that it means I should keep practicing.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
My favorite part of Shiku Kai was learning the different ways to practice kendo. Patterned Waza wasn\u2019t something I did often, but it forced me to critically think and focus with my motodachi. In Keiko, there are times that I panic and lose focus, but the patterns Iwanami-sensei gave us forced my attention to stay engaged and not get consumed by how I felt.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve learned so much from this experience, and I\u2019m looking forward to coming back. I\u2019ll keep trying to implement everything I learned from the senseis in my own kendo, and when we meet again, I\u2019m sure that I\u2019ll have a lot to fix! Still, that\u2019s the fun part!<\/p>\n
