I consider myself incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to participate in practice at Shi Ku Kai.<\/p>\n
As a foreigner, it is easy to feel like an outsider. Like you don\u2019t belong or worse are encroaching upon something really significant for others. A piece of heritage and history. Something not meant for you.<\/p>\n
But at Shi Ku Kai, they embrace everyone. Every race, age, creed, walk of life. All are welcome and all can do Kendo. It is an amazing experience to be not only invited but encouraged to participate and instructed with the same seriousness as all of the students \u2014 regular and guests.<\/p>\n
The instruction is excellent. Fluent in English and Japanese, the focus is on fundamentals. Build a strong foundation to build upon and the sky is the limit as to how far you can go.<\/p>\n
I have had the pleasure of knowing Abe Koki Sensei and Iwanami Yoshio Sensei for many, many years. Only more recently (over Covid) I began virtual instruction. I am not in bogu, but along with the other members of our group from the Tulsa branch of the dojo, I was welcomed to join keiko.<\/p>\n
The level was high but the focus on fundamentals means that even if you are newer to Kendo, you can join and it is even more important as someone new to practicing to learn the right way to do Kendo from the start. What to do is demonstrated visually and explained thoroughly. Repetition ensures that the correct movements are committed to both mental and muscle memory.<\/p>\n
Technology is also employed as part of the instruction so that you can watch yourself. The benefit of a third party view is incredibly helpful. So as part of the teaching environment your practice is reviewed and specific things both positive and needing correction are addressed directly.<\/p>\n
The friendly environment, the bilingual instruction, the focus on fundamentals, the extraordinary teaching skill, and the decades of experience culminate in Shi Ku Kai being a truly singular dojo and one of the best Kendo dojo in all of Japan in my opinion.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
