Kakaru Keiko and High Level Improvement<\/p>\n
“Since 2011, I have had the absolute pleasure of visiting Shiku Kai for direct instruction every few years. Iwanami Sensei also visits our dojo here in Tulsa, Oklahoma whenever possible–and we have benefited tremendously from his instruction, and that of the other high-ranking instructors there.<\/p>\n
Since first joining the practice at Shiku Kai I am always struck by the major differences between\u00a0 their methods of practice in comparison to most other dojo I have visited. Iwanami Sensei prioritizes an understanding of foundations such as ashi-sabaki (footwork), shisei (posture), suburi (solo-drilling), and Kirikaeshi. Additionally, the Sensei at Shiku Kai also approach Keiko in a manner more similar to that of police dojo throughout Kanagawa–which is referred to in the dojo as Kakaru Keiko. While I am readily familiar with conventional Kakarigeiko as part of fundamental practice within Kendo Kihon, Shiku Kai’s implementation is somewhat different from the norm.<\/p>\n
When Keiko begins, the Motodachi (typically a higher rank Sensei) will initiate attacks against the kakarite with as much enthusiasm as possible. The Kakarite then strives in kind to continuously deal with the intense pressure created by the Motodachi by attacking constantly without cessation. There is very little opportunity for either side to “reset” or “set up” Waza as one would in Shiai–which requires a completely separate mentality from that of conventional Keiko at most other dojo. Both sides must totally commit to their time together without hesitation–total focus and commitment must be maintained until the Motodachi concludes.<\/p>\n
While this practice appears daunting at first, it has proven to be tremendously influential in personal improvement for not only myself, but the other members of our dojo as well. I have come to understand through personal experience that growth–particularly at higher levels and ranks–can require a practitioner to significantly reevaluate their understanding of basic practice. Pushing through barriers built up over years of bad habits can become very difficult as one advances in Kendo, and having a Motodachi willing to undergo the intensity necessary to overcome bad habits is critical. The Sensei at Shiku Kai are always willing to undertake this most difficult journey for students that join their practice.<\/p>\n
